Musculoskeletal Medicine – A New Frontier

The Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) curriculum aims to produce doctors and allied healthcare practitioners who support two major healthcare areas that require urgent attention.

Firstly, there is a need to establish countrywide competence in the knowledge base and clinical skills to support comprehensive musculoskeletal (MSK) services.

Secondly, there is a requirement to prescribe ‘Exercise as Medicine’ to promote physical activity [PA] throughout the population—preschool, school-aged children, adults, those with disabilities, and the elderly. In particular, those individuals with underlying co-morbidities and a chronic disease burden.

This SEM MSc will provide an in-depth understanding of exercise medicine’s practical applications in chronic disease states at an individual and population level. World-famous SEM doctors who are actively involved in the "front line" of sports like rugby, professional golf, athletics, and football developed the MSc in Musculoskeletal Medicine. Our academic faculty have extensive experience as clinical lecturers and examiners in Sports Medicine at the highest levels. The MSc in Sports Exercise Musculoskeletal Medicine is an 8-module program that covers a wide range of topics, including epidemiology, clinical research, basic science, musculoskeletal medicine, elite sport, sports law, spinal injuries, and acute medicine. Each module provides specialized knowledge and skills essential for a successful career in sports medicine and musculoskeletal health.

The SEM MSc curriculum is mapped against the Specialist Training requirements ratified by the Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board (JRCPTB). The JRCPTB has a role in quality management by monitoring and driving improvement in the standard of all medical specialities on behalf of the three Royal Colleges of Physicians in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London.

  • In this module, students will delve into the world of epidemiology, exploring the dynamics of population health. We will examine the crucial role of health promotion and its impact on public well-being. Moreover, you will gain insights into the research evidence that underscores the immense benefits of physical activity while also learning how to interpret cardiovascular risk tables. The module will also equip you with the skills to prescribe exercise for rehabilitation and surgical contexts.

  • Module 2 focuses on the critical aspects of clinical research, appraisal, and reflection. Students will gain a deep understanding of various genres of medical research, honing their academic reading, writing, and analytical skills. The module encourages engagement with academic papers and discussions, facilitating the development of reflective practice and integrating narrative medicine into research and deliberative processes.

  • The Elite Performance in Sports and Exercise Psychology course comprehensively explores the unique psychological attributes and strategies that distinguish elite athletes. It identifies the key characteristics and skills essential for high-level performance, laying the groundwork for athletic excellence. The course incorporates neuroscientific research to explain how an elite athlete's brain contributes to superior performance. It also employs narrative frameworks like the "Hero’s Journey" to chart the psychological development from novice to expert levels. A critical component of the course is its focus on coping with injuries, blending theory with practical strategies to navigate setbacks inherent in competitive sports. Emotional regulation and Superior Performance Intelligence are discussed as vital elements that enable athletes to manage their emotional states and outperform peers. The course also scrutinizes the role of perfectionism, considering its benefits and drawbacks. It culminates with techniques to achieve the state of optimal focus known as "In the Zone."

  • Module 4 is dedicated to the multifaceted world of Musculoskeletal (MSK) Medicine. We will delve into the assessment and management of both acute and chronic MSK conditions. Additionally, students will gain proficiency in various imaging techniques, including CT, MRI, Ultrasound, PET, DXA, and DAT. Chronic pain management, diagnostic criteria for imaging, and the application of MRI in specific contexts, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, will also be explored

  • This module will explore the unique challenges and opportunities within elite sports. This module covers a wide range of topics, from defining elite athletes and their behaviours to understanding the nervous system of elite performers. It also delves into medical emergencies, life support protocols, and the responsible use of acute medication in sports.

  • Module 6 addresses the intersection of sports law and ethical behaviour, focusing on sportsmanship, cheating, and gambling concepts. We will delve into the complex issues surrounding doping in sports and examine genetics-related concerns. Ethical issues in coaching and parenting, athlete mental health, and sports media are also essential components of this module.

  • This module equips students with the skills necessary for rapid assessment of spinal function and the safe transport of spinal-injured patients. Additionally, it covers the unique aspects of paediatric and elderly patient management in extreme medical situations. Students will also learn about exercise, nutrition, and general health medication guidelines in special patient populations.

  • The final module explores acute medical conditions specific to the SEMMSK field, including cardiology, respiratory, bone metabolism, endocrinology, and the female athletic triad. Special considerations for paediatric and elderly medicine patients will be discussed, providing students with a well-rounded understanding of acute medical management.
