Dr. Pádraig Sheeran

Dr Pádraig Sheeran has an extensive and distinguished career in the medical field, marked by a rich tapestry of experiences and accomplishments. Beginning with foundational training, he started as a Senior House Officer (SHO) in Medicine at the Royal London Hospital, specializing in Haematology and Dermatology in 1984. His journey led him through various roles, including Accident and Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics Gynaecology, and Registrar positions in Anaesthesia in different prestigious institutions in the UK and Ireland.

Notably, he achieved Fellowships in Paediatric Anaesthesia and Paediatric Intensive Care at Our Lady’s Hospital, Crumlin, Dublin. During his tenure as a Consultant Anaesthetist, he practised in the areas of Paediatrics, Regional Anaesthesia, Intensive Care, and Obstetric Anaesthesia at the Mid-West Regional Hospital and Beaumont Hospital.

Pádraig assumed the position of Dean within the Faculty of Sports Medicine, where he assumed the principal responsibility for formulating and advocating the accreditation of the Higher Professional Training Programme before the pertinent authorities, namely the U.K. Faculty and the Medical Council, culminating in its formal acceptance in 2017.

Venturing internationally, Pádraig pursued fellowships in Paediatric ICU, Paediatric Cardiac Anaesthesia, and conducted research at Boston Children’s Hospital and Massachusetts General, Boston, USA, earning recognition and grants for his investigations into High-Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV) in lung injury.

Leadership roles have been a prominent feature of his career, with a decade-long engagement as Director and Council Member of the College of Anaesthetists of Ireland. He chaired Hospital Inspections, served as Vice-Chair of Examinations, and took on the responsibility of Hospital Advisory positions, contributing significantly to the field.

Pádraig’s involvement with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) showcases his dedication to academic and professional development. He served as the Dean of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine and played pivotal roles in various committees and boards. Beyond his clinical and academic pursuits, Pádraig has shown a deep commitment to philanthropy, fundraising, and sports medicine. His endeavours include serving as Medical Director for Kilimanjaro Achievers, fundraising for healthcare departments, and providing medical support for rugby teams. Notably, his work with Kilimanjaro Achievers earned recognition twice at the Irish Health Care Awards.

Continuously pursuing education and personal development, Pádraig has achieved additional qualifications, including an MBA, an MSc in Leadership, Membership in the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine (UK), and diplomas in Sports Nutrition, Sports Psychology, and Pain Medicine.

As Chair of Wellbeing and Mindfulness at the College of Anaesthetists Ireland and a Visiting Professor in Rome, Pádraig showcases a holistic approach to medicine, emphasizing not only clinical excellence but also leadership, education, and the promotion of wellbeing. His multifaceted career reflects a deep commitment to advancing medical knowledge, providing exemplary patient care, and fostering the next generation of healthcare professionals.
